The Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy is the first Chinese Sci-Fi book(s) I’ve ever read. Actually, it’s probably the first Chinese book I’ve ever read. The friend who recommended it said this made a big difference. I did find some differences from other Sci-Fi books but nothing that I would have noticed if he hadn’t pointed it out. So let’s leave that out and talk about the books.
The trilogy is composed of 3 books: The Three-Body Problem, The Dark Forest, Death’s End. I had a big problem with these books – I couldn’t stop reading them and had a couple of weeks of little sleep :-). Most of the time the reading was enjoyable with a small number of places where the story was either too compressed – 10 things happening at the same time in 2 pages, or too expanded – long descriptions and nothing happening for a 10 pages. The books get longer, the first one is ~400 pages, second one ~500, and the third one ~700. Not sure if this is because of the translation, but I feel that the books could have been separated into more books, but I guess that trilogies sell better than quatrilogies (if there is such a thing). The literary style also changes between books, which I didn’t like as much.
As for the content of the book, it was refreshing to learn a couple of things about Chinese history and culture, among other things. You can click on the book links if you want to read about what they are about (so it’s not my fault if I spoiled the plot).
Bottom line, highly recommended. Get it from your preferred book seller or library (1), (2), (3).
